Are Letter Box Drops Dead?

Recently I have been having more clients ask and question me on mail box drops, the kind that typically come in the form of a DL and hit a number of houses within a day.

Would I be raving about the success of letter box drops any time soon? The answer would be no.
However it is one form of marketing in a now long list of methods.

So if you are toying with the idea of running your next promotion through the letter boxes of your local suburb, consider the following:

1. Know your market.

From my experience it is the older generation who still travel to the letter box and take joy in sifting through the junk mail. If your market is todays youth then in my opinion avoid this method as it can become a costly exercise for little gain.

2. Know your industry.

I have found that particular industries who are known to letter box drop still see success through this method. A couple of real estate clients of mine have spoken positively of this method but once again this could be selective based on areas.

3. Be creative!

The letter box is still jam packed full of advertisements on a daily basis. So be sure to create something that will stand out from the crowd. Paper weights and stock finishes can play a vital role in someone taking notice.

4. Keep it simple and to the point.

Like any piece of promotional material it should have a purpose. It is not enough just to advertise your business, there is too much clutter fighting for attention. For your material to work you need them to engage and take the next step whether that be claiming something on your website or calling for a quote. Ensure it has a purpose.

So to summarise, do I think letter box drops will be a marketing tool in the future? My answer would be no. However for select markets and industries it can be a good brand awareness tool.
